Manifesting and Awareness of the Ego
One challenge I often have with my coaching clients is when we talk about what it means to be responsibly abundant. Before we journey down the road of doing their inner work of normalizing of the ego, their idea of abundance is wanting the big house, the fancy car, and hangin with celebrities. I'll tell them, "well that's great and you can have all those things if that's your desire but once you start working on your ego, raising your vibration, and becoming your Higher Self you might find that you no longer desire those things.
What I have seen over recent years is that there has been a huge influx of motivational speakers teaching the power of manifestation and how to attract money. They are teaching that it's okay to have these things and that is true because it's all part of your journey but they don't typically teach that it's also okay not desire to be wasteful and be a drain on humanity nor do they typically teach about the human condition of overinflated ego or unconsciousness.

The Importance of the Power of Manifestation
There is an important reason that we need to learn the power of manifestation. Teaching one about manifesting abundance helps make sure that Maslow's pyramid of needs are taken care of. If one is constantly worried about survival then they will not ascend out of their root chakra. In other words, they will be telling the universe "I don't have enough money" which the universe hears as "you don't want more money" because it is just a mirror that acts on our conscious thoughts.
This knowledge can be very powerful but humanity has been suffering and trapped in their own unconscious thoughts for thousands of years and so we need to be taught how to do this and since it involves rewiring neurological pathways, it will not happen overnight. Educating the masses that our thoughts create our reality and that we have the power to change our reality will allow us the power to create new systems that actually work for us.
These odl systems rely on our unconsciousness and lack of understanding of the power of our thoughts. When we wake up to the fact that we create our own reality, the systems will collapse once we are no longer giving them our unconscious energy by not making a choice. Sometimes making a choice can support the system as well if it is done in a reactionary state of ego; ie left/right republican/democrat. In this way, it's important for us to not only learn the power of manifestation but also do the work on the normalization of your ego.
If one does do the work to normalize the ego along with learning about the power of manifestation then it's possible that they will solve one challenge by getting out of survival mode only to be presented with another challenge of that feeds the ego, consumerism.
Generally speaking, the more we have, the more we become disconnected and distracted by those attachments. Again, it's important we don't see this as a right or wrong rule, only a tendency and a reminder to keep take a spiritual assessment of ourselves every so often to see if we are falling into the consumerism trap. It's about balance. Also generally speaking, the more distractions you have, the more challenging it can be to attain enlightenment.
Is this true for everyone? I'm sure there are exceptions out there which is why it's meant to be a guide and not a rule although many do treat these spiritual concepts as rules because that is what they have been conditioned to do by their control and dominance based religions and governments which keep us in the duality of right and wrong (judgement) instead of balance (allowance).
Religious Confusion
Here is where the message from certain religions and the message from manifesting gets skewed; If you read bible, you might interpret the message that poor people have a better chance of making it to heaven because it states the rich people will have a harder time. As a result, many people give all their money away and live life as a pauper feeling guilty about money thinking this is the Christian thing to do. Not only does the guilt about having too money lower their vibration, but they will normally be locked in survival mode because they have manifested for themselves to have a lack of money. This is not getting you closer to God but actually moving you further away.
Here is another interpretation of the message; once you raise your vibration, you might find you no longer want or need the attachments you thought you did. One might discover that the more energetic attachments you have to things, and the bigger and more numerous they are, the more disconnected and unconscious you will feel. If you are distracted by worldly things of the physical reality then you might not know what it's like to feel the connection, love, and bliss from having achieved enlightenment. Something that once achieved feels much better than the bliss one might feel from have that beautiful Mercedes.
Alternatively, if you are choosing not be abundant because you feel it is wrong to have money then you will have challenges with creating guilt, resentment, and judgement about having it and will block your ability to receive it or "be in the flow". For example, if you resent those that have money because they are not helping humanity by being wasteful then you are also pushing money away from yourself, resentment being a lower vibration. Here again, you are telling the universe you do not want money and so the universe, being a mirror will give you what you desire; a lack of money.
The Case for Disconnection
On the other hand, having had the feeling of disconnection and unconscious; being drawn to consumerism creates the experience of feeling what it is like to be disconnected from Spirit. Would we have known what love and connection to the all that is truly feels like if we were always connected and feel love? In this way the dark (disconnection) can teach us and make us even more compassionate beings than never having had the experience in the first place because now we know what it feels like to be disconnected and now we know what connection feels like and only makes our resolve to experience less suffering in the world even greater.
